As part of its latest disruptive move fuelling the ongoing
price war, T-Mobile has decided to allow users to roll over their unused data
from one month to the next.
T-Mobile has promised people to roll
over any data its customers don’t use from month to month. These include data
plans ranging from 1 GB to 11 GB a month. Not only this; the deal comes with an
additional 10 gigabytes of data on top of the data plans the customers are already
putting into use.
So where does the act of rolling
actually end? Well, the rollover data will
only be allowed to last for a year. For example, the data you didn’t use in
January 2015 expires in January 2016. It is indeed great news for users. However,
the operator does not clarify exactly how January’s unused data will be
different from February’s unused data, which could make T-Mobile’s plan
slightly tricky for customers to keep a record of.
The change will be affective for
the plans of most of T-Mobile’s 50 million users, out of whom only 20% use
T-Mobile’s unlimited data plan. Criticizing AT&T and Verizon for their data
plan policies, T-Mobile tells users that although these companies trick them by
offering more data, users ultimately end up losing it all at the end of the
month. Alternately, T-Mobile has already eliminated overage fees and penalties
that pop in when you use more than your allotted monthly data.
T-Mobile’s new data rollover
policy is the eighth installment of T-Mobile’s “Uncarrier” strategy. T-Mobile
has set its eyes on AT&T and Verizon by becoming a customer-friendly
carrier who genuinely cares for its users.
In its first initiatives,
T-Mobile eliminated contracts, letting customers pay lower monthly rates and
buy their own phones. Next, they launched their “Jump” program that allowed
customers to upgrade phones twice a year. And more recently, the telecom giant
killed roaming fees and slashed per-minute and text charges.
All these changes have a lot of
advantages for the customers and are definitely going to benefit them. However,
the resulting competition will make the price war even fiercer. It will be
interesting to see how the competition catches up!
Telecom contracts come due quicker than we all like, but this is the perfect time to renegotiate the Toll Free Service you currently have in place.
