T-Mobile to Provide Customized Router for Better Wi-Fi Calling

In a new move that will ease lives of phone callers, T-Mobile has made arrangements to provide a bespoke Wi-Fi router to its subscribers that prioritizes voice calls over other traffic. This router will be called the T-Mobile Personal CellSpot and require a $25 deposit for installation. The device would also be able to work alongside your existing household router.

The company made the announcement regarding its upcoming device at a T-Mobile Uncarrier event in San Francisco on Wednesday. At this event, the carrier also mentioned that plans to activate Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE for all postpaid customers on its network are in the pipeline too. The reason for all this is because of the Wi-Fi calling capabilities in iOS 8, which Apple officially announced with the iPhone 6 on Tuesday.

Other new phones will also have the ability to make Wi-Fi calls and texts on T-Mobile out of the box, and older devices will get an over-the-air update enabling this service. A deal will be offered to subscribers using older, incompatible devices by T-Mobile through its Jump upgrade program.

Many phones have been known to support unlicensed mobile calling (UMA) and have had Wi-Fi calling capabilities on T-Mobile since 2008. In these phones, Wi-Fi calls have not counted against subscriber minutes since 2011. Other Android devices have already been making Wi-Fi calls on T-Mobile for years. However, since Apple announced UMA support in iOS earlier this week, it’s a great opportunity for T-Mobile to advertise its strong reputation and credibility of Wi-Fi calling.

The T-Mobile Personal CellSpot will be available to users on September 17th. The device will be made by Asus, and will be truly private, that is to say, other T-Mobile subscribers would not be able to make use of it unless they know your Wi-Fi password. It is claimed that the device comes with a ‘unique patent pending technology’ that prioritizes HD voice calls over other traffic.
